International Schools

There are many international schools in Singapore to cater for the needs of expatriate children. However, at the moment there are long waiting queues for international schools as not enough places are available to handle the increase in expatriate children. We advise to contact the schools in Singapore early to secure a place.

Increasingly expatriates employed on a local terms choose to send their children to local schools and at the moment there are over 22,000 international students in the main stream education system of Singapore including those in junior colleges and centralised institutions.

Recently, the Ministry of Education centralised school admissions for foreign students to local schools. Students seeking admission to levels Primary 2 to 5 and Secondary 1 to 3 need to undergo a centralised test. Note, that Singaporean students will always enjoy priority over new international students.

International schools in Singapore are quite expensive and you may be advised to negotiate with your employer to integrate their payment into your benefit package.

International Schools have a vast number of extra curricular activities and children are fairly busy and involved in school life until late afternoon. Some schools do not provide afternoon transport and students must either be picked up by their parents or come back on their own. Check with the respective transport office.

Safety on School Busses

Fleets of school busses pick up children from their homes all around Singapore. The school bus operators use locally developed global postitioning systems (GPS) with bus tracking system and radio frequency identification (RFID) on tags embedded in the students' passes.

The system tracks children when a child gets on and off a bus. The bus driver can identify the students when they tap their passes on a RFID reader as students' photographs are displayed on a dashboard device with an LCD screen. This information is transfered to a centralised server at the bus operator's call centre which then sends SMS messages to parents. The bus is directed to use the shortest route to their destination through GPS satelites and the system can pick up distress calls at any time.

It is also safe to use local busses and you may search for the bus for your child on the website below.

Special Needs Education

While there are a number of special schools for severely disabled children, Singapore does not offer any systematic approach for the needs of children with mild mental, developmental or behavioral disorders. A number of childcare centres have recently implemented the Integrated Childcare Programme for disabled children.

The few existing specialists currently work in different hospitals and organizations and coordination and monitoring of treatment is difficult. From about 20 pediatricians in all of Singapore, only 10 have a specialist qualification for children with special needs.
