Singaporeans work hard and play hard. Much has been said about the country’s high cost of living standard, but compared with the West, things like food, accommodation and clothes are still cheap.
It is still possible to live at low cost and happily in Singapore, depending on your spending choice. You can go for modest meals and still enjoy delicious local cuisines at hawker stalls or a restaurant splurge in a fine-dining setting. You can choose to send kids for government subsidised schools or self-contained private schools.
All in all, Singapore is still an excellent and affordable country to stay in. Despite its tiny size on the world map, there are aplenty of activities for the families and individuals. Many Singaporeans are bilingual. Most speak English and another language, most commonly Mandarin, Malay, Tamil or a local dialect of English (Singlish). All the children study English as their first language in school, under the compulsory local education system, and their mother-tongue language as their second language. Thus, most Singaporeans are effectively bilingual, especially the youths in today’s society.
The unit of currency is the Singapore dollar, locally referred to as the ‘Singdollar’, which is made up of 100 cents. Singapore uses 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 50¢ and $1 coins, while notes come in denominations of $2, $5, $10, $50, $100, $500 and $1000.
The locals and expats here loves food and shopping. Apartments are small so eating out is essential for most people. The dining scene boasts a wide array of cuisines from chicken rice, nasi lemak, fish ball noodles, laksa, roti prata, fish head curry, to chili crab and seafood. Enjoy a walk down Orchard shopping belt hunting for brands such as Gucci, Armani and many other brands. Other shopping spots such as Vivo City and Marina Bay Sands are popular among the locals.
For the outdoor goers, there are many sports leisure activities for sport enthusiasts or families. Leisure strolls, cycling or jogging at the park and beach are common here too. An enjoyable day out to Sentosa has been one of the hottest favourite activity here.
