There is huge competition in Singapore over who is running the most successful website for expatriates. The number of expat portals has increased over the past years and some show impressive statistics. There are three common types:
- the property agent’s website disguised as information portal for expatriates with focus on providing property information and images to attract rental clients. Content to the website is mainly provided by adding a large amount of property images - literally down to the kitchen sink and the toilet bowl of each apartment available. The remaining information is added by attaching a forum to the site where there is a steady visitor flow discussing the world and his brother and adding “content” to the various sections created. Forum visitors tend to stay endlessly on a section page or jump between forum sections. This feeds their need for “company" and relations” rather than their need for unbiased information. But the website clearly fulfills its purpose to attract expatriates in need of a new home and the property agent happily receives his commission.
- the expatriate-created website targeting expatriates in their language with focus on providing information and contacts for fellow countrymen. These sites are mainly non-commercial but need to be supported either by sponsors or advertisers (again often from their own community). They create a valuable comfort zone for newly arriving expats.
- the advertiser’s website disguised as information portal targeting global expatriates in a city or region with focus on either collecting the visitor’s email address for further use of email advertising or linking to the service and product providers featured on the site. Content is often mainly created by attaching a forum (see above) and then duplicating this recipe in other cities in the region. The combined visitor numbers are impressing advertising clients who hope to receive quality referrals in need of their products and services through email advertising or banner advertisements. The quality of unbiased information is again questionable but the directories provide a choice of service and product providers of all sorts and reliability.
How we differ from the above expatriate websites in Singapore
We are not following any of the concepts explained above, as we focus on delivering information.
We are backed by enterAsia Information Services Pte Ltd - a company providing high quality relocation information free of charge to multi national companies and their transferees. Our revenue derives from attaching relocation related brand name services to the various websites, which are linked to our online relocation guides. Thus the cost of relocation services is transferred from the multinational employer to the profit making service provider. We are often regarded as competition to traditional fee charging relocation companies but rather see ourselves as an alternative or completing rather than competing relocation service.
If high visitor numbers easily impress you, you may be disappointed with our statistics. But there is a saying that the best things come in small packages and we have other strength:
- enterAsia Information Services Pte Ltd is owned by a former journalist. Consequently we are an independent website publisher and all our websites are maintained by independent editors. We research and provide a huge amount of facts and invent tools to facilitate expatriate life management. entersingapore's content is second to none in quality and quantity compared to other similar websites in Singapore. We have been awarded “the really useful website” award by the Federation of International Trade Associations.
- The purpose of www.entersingapore.info is to deliver unbiased information to expatriates prior, during and after their relocating to the city. We also link on the spot to well over 4000 selected websites with specialized information in various related fields. If all of them would link back to our site we would blast Google’s rating system. But the current rating system does not reward natural outbound links yet.
- While some expat targeting websites in Singapore have added services of questionable quality to boost their visitor numbers and page views, we believe that being associated with this kind of services may reflect badly on our website and associates. We rather accept lower numbers of visitors of a higher quality and purchase power. It is not quantity but quality what we are after.
- All our anchor partners are reputable often international renowned companies who since years deliver first class services to the global workforce of multinational companies in Singapore. Their presence on the website is complementing the featured content. For example. the associated property agent - Knight Frank - is internationally known and locally well connected to Singapore’s property developers and landlords since over 60 years.
- Not featuring a forum guarantees that our advertisers and partners do not risk being associated with unsolicited content beyond our control. We do not make use of our visitors' email contacts beyond passing them to the anchor partners associated with us.
- In line with our tag line “small is beautiful”, we do not occupy a flashy office. Our editors work from their homes and we communicate with our clients via the Internet in the true spirit of a virtual business. We operate our website from a virtual private server located in Singapore. All this keeps the cost low and reflects in the fact that we can offer a very competitive and exclusive advertising package and provide our information for free to all expatriates. In fact, some relocation companies charge a fortune for the information we provide for free to the employees of all multinational companies in Singapore and the world!
- We are the inventor and sole provider of e-relocation Asia, a relocation guide used by a number of global companies to transfer their global workforce to Singapore and Shanghai. The online program is linked to www.entersingapore.info and www.entershanghai.info and we catch the eye and interest of prospective clients before they arrive. Earlier than the competitors of our exclusive anchor partners!
